Môle Saint-Nicolas is one of the best places to relax in all of Haiti. Away from it all, it is a spot where you can relax for a few days: from beautiful white sandy beaches and nice dives to visits to areas containing historical ruins or excursions to beautiful villages in the area. Also if you are a kitesurfing lover, you can enjoy this place like a child.

You can’t just come to Môle Saint-Nicolas for one day, you have to spend a couple of nights to really enjoy the place.

Tip: If you have back pain or similar, do not hesitate to travel there by plane and don’t forget to add diving goggles to your suitcase.

| How to get there |

Option 1: Drive to the spot

  1. Assuming you are coming from Port-au-Prince, you should take National Route 1 towards Gonaïves (the road is in very good condition). Once you arrive at the main square of Gonaïves (you will see the cathedral in front of you), you must be attentive and take the Rue Christophe street until you arrive at the Route of Bois d’Homme, and you just take it towards Anse Rouge.
  2. A few meters after leaving Gonaives, the road turns into a dirt road, which in case it has not rained a lot should not pose any difficulty because it is usually well preserved until it reaches Anse Rouge.
  3. On the stretch of road between Gonaïves and Anse Rouge, following this road along the coast, there are multiple recommended stops:
    • At the beginning, you have some deserted beaches with beautiful waters and nice fishing villages.
    • Shortly before reaching Anse Rouge it is essential to stop at the salt pans that appear on the side of the road and get out of the vehicle just to get lost and see how they get the salt in this beautiful landscape.
    • Once past Anse Rouge, I personally recommend continuing along the coast road, the one that goes in the direction of Bombardopolis. Although it is true that once we leave Anse Rouge behind, the road from this point on will be more complicated but not difficult. The only thing we must take into account is that we will have to go slower due to the holes/rocks that may appear on the road.
    • A little after leaving Anse Rouge, I recommend stopping at the beautiful beach of Petit Paradis. In the middle of nowhere, alone and with turquoise waters, a dip allows you to regain energy to continue the journey.
    • From the beach of Petit Paradis to Môle Saint-Nicolas, just follow the road that will leave the coast at one point and then rejoin it once you reach your destination.
    • In my opinion, from Gonaives to Môle Saint-Nicolas is a very nice journey. One that you should make with the stops mentioned so that it is not just a ride but an enjoyment.

In short: 3h from PauP to Gonaives and around 5h from Gonaïves to Môle Saint-Nicolas

Option 2: Plane

  1. First of all, you must arrange the transportation days before the departure since there are no regular flights from Port-au-Prince to Môle Saint-Nicolas.
  2. You will have to select the type of aircraft according to the number of passengers, there are airplanes that have from 3 to 7 passenger seats.
  3. You should arrive about 30 minutes before your flight at the Guy Malary airport (a few meters from the main airport of Port au Prince). This airport has free parking and there is virtually no waiting in line for anything.
  4. Enjoy the best views that you can have in an airplane, since in less than an hour you will be landing in the middle of some fields.
  5. Remember to arrange with the accommodation the arrival time and call them before taking off, because where you land is literally a field in the middle of nowhere so they will have to come and pick you up.

Lodge/Camp

Enjoying this place and disconnecting from work can take a few days. In order to rest in this small paradise, we have several options:

  1. You can stay in one of the hotels in the area: Hotel Columbus (It is composed of multiple apartments around a large garden that ends in a swimming pool near the beach.) or Hotel Beau Rivage (We do not have our own information about this hotel).
  2. You can go to Boukan Guinguette, a place where you can either camp or rent a small bungalow.

At this point, I must recommend Boukan Guinguette, where the treatment we have found has always been excellent. The beach is spectacular and the atmosphere blends in with the area as no other place manages to do. Here you will be able to disconnect 100%. In the afternoon you can lie down in one of the hammocks around the beach and read a book or simply enjoy the sound of the sea while you have a drink at the beach bar. Of course, do not forget to book in advance and call the days before to remind them that you arrive because arriving unexpectedly can make the services worse.

Meals

You should know that wherever you are staying they will offer you breakfast included and you will be able to have lunch and dinner without problems. There you can have the typical Haitian dishes, always accompanied with rice and the classic drinks (Prestige, soft drinks, etc.).

Apart from this I really recommend the breakfast with creppes from Boukan Guinguette (which are included in the accommodation).

As in any place, in the village of Môle Sain-Nicolas itself, there are a couple of places to eat at good prices and with local products. It is good to let them know in advance so that they can prepare their produce as they often buy ingredients from fishermen or at the market to cook according to the request they have. It is worth trying them if only for a walk and to discover a little of the urban environment of the area where we are, which is totally quiet and welcoming.

Excursions

This place is the perfect spot for different excursions, to be chosen according to their duration:

Excursion to the village of Preskil

Duration: Half-day

This small village of thatched houses is located on the other side of the bay of Môle Saint-Nicolas. Inhabited mainly by fishing families, with a relaxed atmosphere, it is located at the point where the bay opens to the sea.
There are two ways to get there:

  • One would be by your own vehicle, although I must warn you that you will have to drive very slowly on the road because it contains areas with multiple rocks along the way.
  • Another option is to take a ride on a local sailboat. Through Boukan Guinguette you can hire a sailboat with a sailor who will make the beautiful journey across the bay.
